You don’t need professional performance experience to apply for the BA Commercial Music degree. There are standard academic entry requirements, but other relevant UK and international qualifications are also considered individually. If you’re earlier in your musical development, you can also apply for the four-year course with an integrated Foundation Year.

LCCM’s Commercial Music degree brings songwriting, production, performance and music business together in one course. Rather than specialising in just one area, you’ll learn how to take more ownership of your music from the first idea through to recording, performing and building your identity as an artist, while developing an understanding of how the industry works.

The Commercial Music degree is built around developing as an original artist, songwriter, producer and performer, while the BMus places greater emphasis on advanced musicianship and developing your principal instrument. Commercial Music gives equal space to songwriting, production, performance and music business, making it particularly suited to artists who want to create and develop their own original music.

The Commercial Music course combines performance, production, songwriting and music business rather than focusing on just one area. You’ll study all four throughout the degree, learning how they connect in a working artist’s career. As you progress, you’ll bring these skills together to develop your own music, artistic identity and professional direction.

Yes. Developing your own musical style and artistic identity is a central part of the course. You’ll explore different genres, songwriting approaches, production techniques and performance styles rather than being trained in one specific sound. As you progress, you’ll be encouraged to experiment, work out what sets you apart and create original music that reflects your own direction.

The BA Commercial Music degree is strongly practice-led, with much of your learning centred around making, producing and performing music. You’ll take part in practical workshops, collaborative projects and live briefs alongside independent creative work. There is also academic and reflective study to help you understand your practice, the wider music industry and the professional context around your work.

You’ll write and record original music throughout the commercial music production degree, both independently and with other students. You’ll develop your songwriting and self-production skills each year, working towards an original body of music in your final year that you’ll write, record and perform to an industry-ready standard as part of your professional portfolio.

Yes. You’ll work on live briefs, hands-on projects and industry-focused activities designed around the realities of working in music. The course also includes guest lectures and masterclasses from music professionals, opportunities to work on industry-driven projects with established organisations and work placement activities, helping you build practical experience and professional connections alongside your studies.

You’ll graduate with a professional portfolio that brings together your original music and development as an artist. Your final year is focused on creating industry-ready work across advanced songwriting, production and performance, while the Professional Portfolio module helps you present your creative practice and develop a strategy for taking your work beyond university and into employment or your own projects.

You’ll develop the creative, technical and professional skills needed to build a career around your music. Alongside songwriting, production and performance, you’ll learn about the music business, branding, marketing and developing your artistic identity. Live briefs, industry projects and your professional portfolio will also help you build experience and prepare for employment, freelance work or your own creative projects.
