LCCM’s BMus (Hons) Music Performance & Production course is aimed at producing versatile, musically literate graduates with the skills, theoretical knowledge and networks needed to develop lasting careers as professional musicians. Programme Leader for BMus Music Performance & Production
From his early days playing Glastonbury in the ’90s to sharing stages with acts like The Levellers and Carleen Anderson, Pat’s musical journey has been diverse and dynamic.
A genre-spanning artist, he’s moved effortlessly from Punk and Grunge to Jazz and Soul, showcasing both creative and performance versatility. In the mid-’90s, his acclaimed bass sample CD gained recognition in top music magazines, and he later revived his grunge band, Laughing Boy, earning airplay on XFM.
Beyond performing, Pat has built a respected career in music education, teaching at LCCM and examining for Rockschool. His journey began as a postboy at Polydor in the ’80s, and in 2023, he was named UK Music’s Tutor of the Year, cementing his status as both an accomplished musician and inspiring mentor.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
BMus (Hons) Music Performance & Production
Undergraduate (Level 4):
- 104 UCAS points from accepted Level 3 qualifications, or equivalent experience
- Successful interview
Foundation (Level 3):
- 48 UCAS points from accepted Level 3 qualifications, or equivalent experience
- 4 GCSEs grade C/4 including English or equivalent (e.g. Functional Skills)
- Successful interview
All applicants meeting the minimum entry requirements and whose application demonstrates the capability to complete this programme will be offered an interview.
The course is taught in English. If you are not a native speaker you will need to demonstrate fluency in reading, writing and oral English at interview/application stage. You may be asked to prove this via a third party test where you should score, as a minimum, the following points: IELTS 5.5 or Duolingo 95

You’ll focus on your principal instrument throughout the course, with specialist tuition to develop your technique, repertoire and individual style. You’ll also explore a range of popular and contemporary music styles through ensemble work, guided listening and performance. As you progress, you’ll have more freedom to shape your musical direction around your own interests.
Practical performance is a major part of the degree. You’ll perform regularly through ensemble classes, rehearsals, instrumental assessments and collaborative projects, developing experience both as an individual musician and as part of a band. In your final year, you’ll work towards a recital on your principal instrument alongside ensemble performances that bring together the skills you’ve developed.
You’ll learn to produce music using Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), alongside recording, mixing and mastering techniques. At LCCM’s Music Box campus, you’ll have access to recording studios, computer labs, performance rooms and practice booths. You’ll also build practical studio skills including microphone recording, audio processing, sequencing, synthesis and creating professional-standard mixes and masters.
The music performance and production degree is assessed through a mix of practical exams and coursework, with no written exams. Depending on the module, assessments can include solo and ensemble performances, instrumental assessments, production work, portfolios, presentations and creative projects, giving you different ways to demonstrate your development as a musician and producer.
No, you don’t need professional music industry experience to apply for the music production and performance degree. You should already have a musical foundation and be ready to develop your skills at degree level. Entry requirements vary depending on whether you apply for the three-year degree or the four-year course with an integrated Foundation Year.
Yes. You can apply to join the BMus Music Performance & Production course in Year 2 or Year 3 through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). We’ll look at your previous qualifications or practical experience and invite you to an interview to discuss your skills, ambitions and reasons for wanting to study at LCCM.
