Usually, it’s not that you didn’t practise enough, it’s that practising alone and performing are two very different experiences.  Performance modules make that difference clear. They’re less about whether you can play, and more about how well your practice holds up when pressure, people and expectations are involved.  Why Instrument Practice Matters in Performance  It’s tempting to think of practice as a bit of a chore and performance as the thing that really counts. Most performances are shaped well before you walk on stage, by how you practise day to day rather than by trying to pull out one perfect moment when it matters. In music performance settings, you’re expected to play consistently across rehearsals, assessments and live situations.  When instrument practice is unfocused, it often shows up in performance as nerves or second-guessing. You may feel proud of their passion and relieved that they care deeply about something, but also worried. Worried about money, stability, long-term prospects, and whether supporting this path is the responsible thing to do. In my role as an Academic Dean, I’ve met with many parents in exactly this position. What’s struck me most is how measured and thoughtful these conversations are. Parents aren’t dismissing their child’s ambitions, they want to understand them, weigh the risks carefully, and help to make the best possible decisions. Before we go on, I should say a little about where I’m coming from. I lead the development and delivery of industry-aligned programmes in music and entertainment, and I’ve spent over 15 years working in higher education. My work focuses on academic quality, student success, and ensuring that what we teach genuinely prepares students for meaningful careers in a rapidly evolving industry. I’m also deeply interested in access and participation, particularly how curriculum design can support students from underrepresented backgrounds. That perspective shapes how I think about music education and how I talk to parents about it. The song is about getting through those journeys with a ‘sweet spirit’ guiding you through it all.”  As part of the prize, Alex will spend two days in the LCCM studio with a staff engineer to record and develop a demo, plus a ÂŁ500 gift to help fund a creative project.  For Alex, writing Sweet Spirit was both a personal outlet and a message for others. â€œThe aim was to reassure people that you’re not alone,” he said. “We’re a united people, collectively going through life together as one.” It was this emotional honesty and openness that struck the judging panel, who felt these qualities were deeply in tune with the spirit of the prize.   Sweet Spirit carries the warmth and sense of togetherness that Harry himself was known for. “This song feels like a fitting tribute to Harry,” Alex shared. “I remember hearing one of his songs at a homecoming party and being inspired by how original and entertaining it was.
